doom

This is about the marines that are NPCs. For the marine that the player controls in the series, see Doom's protagonist.

The Marines are a military organization present (or at least mentioned) in most of the Doom games (except the 2016 Reboot although in this aspect they are replaced by NeoPhalanx and, to a certain extent, the Elite Guard) they have an expanded presence in Doom 3, where they appear as NPCs, and allies, which are stationed on the Mars base.

Background

Classic Doom

According to the TNT: Evilution manual, the Marines are the military organisation of the United States, in the manual for the original Doom the marines are currently engaged in an unknown conflict, where one of its commanders ordered his soldiers to fire upon civilians, only to be killed by one of his Soldiers.

In the original Doom series, the player plays as "Doomguy" is part of a marine team, stationed on an unknown Mars outpost, that was sent to Phobos after Deimos vanished from the sky, and Phobos stopped communication after sending a distress call, apart from the Doom Marine, their whole squad is wiped out, leaving the Doomguy as the lone survivor.

Doom I

The Classic Doom Marine from original Doom game. He fights his way through Phobos, Deimos and Hell. Depending on version of the game he returns to earth via a teleporter only to discover Earth has been invaded, and that his pet rabbit Daisy is dead. Later games either follow other marines in similar situations, or retcon them into being the original marine (from Doom to Final Doom, and Doom 64). Some other releases go as far to tie him being the Doom 3 marine.

Doom I Enhanced

This version changes the setting of Episode I to Mars (in reference to UAC Mars Research Facilities from Doom 3).

You're a marine--one of Earth's best--recently assigned to the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) research facility on Mars. When an experiment malfunctions and creates a portal to Hell, the base is overrun by blood-thristy demons. You must shoot your way out to survive.

Doom II

Depending on the release the Marine in Doom II is a separate character from the character in Doom 1 having different experience than the original games character. He was a survivor of a parallel invasion on Mars, while the other Marine was fighting through Phobos, Deimos and Hell.

In other sources such as Doom II Prima strategy guide, Doom PSX, Doom RPG, Doom BFG Edition, Doom II Enhanced and Doom + Doom II. The character from Doom 1 and Doom II are the same, and his backstory follows the ending of Episode 3/4 with him teleporting to Earth just as invasion begins.

After arriving on Earth in Doom 2, the Doom Marine meets up with fellow marines, and soldiers to battle the spaceport, but much like the original game, the entire group is wiped out, except for the Doom Marine. Or they fight with him in co-op mode (see Doom II: The Official Strategy Guide).

Final Doom

Apart from the first two games, Final Doom reveals that the marines are not as reckless, and incompetent, been shown to wipe out hundreds-to thousands of demons, with no little than 200 men, even being used as "mop up squads" after the invasion of Earth by Hell in the second game, however much like the previous games, Hell was able to out maneuver the Marines.

The hero from the previous game (presumably aforementioned Marine (Doom II) or the consolidated Doom Marine character from Doom 1 onwards) finishes what he started...

Some fans debate if they are same characters at all (but one or two more unnamed marines), the manual confirms at least both Episodes follow the same character aka as the 'space trooper'.[1]

Doom 64 (classic)

MarinesfightingD64

In Doom 64 the marines do not appear, beyond the Doom Marine, the only one, sent to the abandoned Phobos/Mars base. Other Doom Marines can be seen in a war with demons in the intro flyover of the Doom symbol. These others wear the multiplayer colors from the original and Doom II. Though Multiplayer was cut from the game early on in development.

Depending on the back story this marine is the Marine from Doom 1 returning to Phobos, or the Marine from Doom II returning to one of the bases he had visited during Doom II, or Final Doom (Earth space port or Moons of Jupiter).

Doom 64 (Remaster)

...or in the Remaster a return to UAC Mars Research Facilities (from Doom 3 or Doom I Enhanced).

Years have passed since you stopped Hell’s invasion of Earth. Quarantined for humanity’s safety, the UAC research facilities on Mars were abandoned and forgotten...until now. A signal from a degraded satellite suggests a single entity remains, and it has the power to resurrect the demons. As the only surviving marine who fought Hell’s forces, you are sent on a lone crusade to hunt down the Mother of Demons and stop a renewed demonic invasion.

Doom RPG

In Doom RPG all of the marines are unnamed (other than B.J. Blazkowicz). They can be found throughout Junction, and aid the player in their final hunt for Dr. Guerard.

The titular Doom Marine is heroic Doom Marine who fought through Doom 1-3, and first game is his return to Mars to stop yet another invasion.

Doom II RPG

This game introduces two marines, and a scientist. Stan Blazkowicz being representative of the classic Doom Marine.

Doom 3

A Marine in full gear.

The Marines are responsible for security and defense at the UAC facilities on Mars. They are purported to have come from the United Nations Space Marine Corps, which is reinforced by the Doom 3 novels (while not directly stated in-game, their names are all generally American).

In the game, Marine HQ is the hub of activity for the Marines and their subsection, Mars-Sec (short for Mars Security), and is also one of the main air and space traffic control centers for Mars City. Marines and Security personnel are stationed and/or patrol throughout the base, in and around areas including the EnPro Plant, Alpha and Delta Labs, the Monorail, and most visibly in Mars City where the Marine HQ and the primary Armory is located. In the character's PDA, a video disc about the Marine's role on Mars states that all Marines are under the command of Master Sergeant Thomas Kelly, who tries unsuccessfully to contain the invasion before being corrupted.

The Marine Corps also apparently possesses a number of spaceships of its own, which the player is commanded by Kelly to call for backup from the UAC Base's primary communications center. Whether or not the player sends the transmission himself, it is still sent - and when the Earth fleet finally arrives to back up Mars, they find the planet wrecked, and only one Marine left alive who had almost single-handedly stopped the entire demon invasion.
