Grezzo 2 (Full name: Grezzo Due - Una Magica Avventura. "Grezzo Two - A Magical Adventure" in English) is an Italian total conversion megawad, developed by Nicola Piro, a member of the metal rock band "Karashow" and first released in 2012.

Grezzo 2 is best known for its blasphemous, satirical and offensive content, gaining many nicknames over the years, the most prominent of which being "The World's Most Offensive Game".

Origin

As stated in a FAQ of the Wad's creator, Nicola Piro, the Grezzo series started out with a mod called "Grezzo 1" which was a wad that changed the graphics of enemies, sounds, and music, made by Nicola back in college. It was never publicly released, as it contained in-jokes understood only by Nicola himself. Only one thing remains of this mod - it's TITLEPIC which can be found in Grezzo 2's files.

Story

The player ruining the silver wedding

The player ruining the silver wedding

The story of Grezzo 2 place in Italy. The player takes control of a man who hates everyone and everything, especially religion and the Catholic Church. First, the player crashes his grandparents' silver wedding, and kills everyone in the church - including Jesus Christ himself. Afterwards, the player goes home, where he suffers a heart attack and dies, going to heaven, where he kills God himself.

After killing God, the player returns to Earth, where he fights zombies (it is implied that this is happening because of God's death), kills Moira Ofrei at her circus, and then takes the Perugia Minimetro back home, where he then goes on a bus trip.

The bus breaks down and crashes, and the plater is forced to proceed on foot - or using a tank - and heading into a Ipercoop department store, where he is then arrested by the Italian police, and imprisoned.

The cops get bored with the player and eventually let him out because of good behavior, and he decideds to take a vacation in Morocco, where he kills more people, both innocent, and islamic terrorists.

Then, the players goes on a pilgrimage to Medjugorie in Bosnia and Herzegovina with Paolo Brosio, where he kills more people, before taking on a Padre Pio-themed aquapark where he engages in a final showdown with Padre Pio.

After killing everyone in the Padre Pio aquapark, the player then kills Pope John Paul II, and hears that the new Pope - Francis - was elected. He goes to the World Youth Day 2013, where a massive onslaught of priests and other enemies attack him, before a second showdown with Jesus Christ takes place - this time Jesus is a massive, muscular figure on a broken cross. Afterwards, he kills Pope Francis.

After the Pope's death, they clone Pope Francis back to life, and depressed, the player goes into a bar to have a drink. Then, he takes a roofie pill, which somehow transports him back into Virgin Mary's womb, where he fights flesh creatures and priests being teleported into the womb much like him, before eventually stumbling upon Jesus Christ as a fetus - repersented as the Christ Child figure.

After killing Christ in Mary's womb, the player fertilizes the egg, and then explodes out of Virgin Mary while she's giving birth in Betlehem, emerging out with a guitar and singing a song to the Three Wise Men, Joseph and on-lookers.

The credits then play, where a song about the game by The Chiappoiders plays, as the player still plays the guitar in the middle of a circular arena as the specators of his concert get killed one-by-one.

Gameplay

Overview

Porco Dio a Perugia (Pig God in Perugia) - Sandbox-like mode

Porco Dio a Perugia (Pig God in Perugia) - Sandbox-like mode

The game is relatively easy, but it sometimes gets almost impossible to beat without cheats, because of it's cobbled-together nature and many bugs. Medikits and other health-replenishing items are replaced with gnocchi, panettone and other types of Italian food.

Grezzo 2 has many weapons (for example, including more than five shotguns), several of which are immensely overpowered, being copy-pasted from other Doom mods such as Russian Overkill. The gore system is copied from Brutal Doom with some gib graphics changed.

Grezzo 2 is composed of cobbled-together assets from other Doom Wads, 2.5D games and many other sources, including (but not reduced to) Blood, Shadow Warrior, Brutal Doom, Nashgore, both Action Dooms and much more - several compilations of Grezzo 2's plagiarism exist online, composed by the Doom community. Even the maps themselves are taken from other mods and games, like Armagedoom, Duke Nukem Caribbean: Life's a Beach or ZBlood, with changed textures -the textures, however, are poorly chosen and misaligned in many places. A comprehensive list of what Grezzo 2 took it's resources from can be found here.

The mod uses 3D models, such as palm trees, streetlamps, etc. In one of the earliest screenshots of Grezzo 2, a 3D enemy is seen, however in the public release version, 3D enemies are absent.

Throughout the game, the player will encounter references to Italian pop culture, politicians, and religion - the game is very anti-religious, mainly towards the Catholic church, and various people associated with it, such as several Popes, Jesus Christ, Padre Pio, and Paolo Brosio are killed in-game by the player.

Enemies range from unarmed civilians, through priests to giant floating Father Pio heads - there are so many enemy variations in the mod that it's impossible to list them all.

The mod uses music from various Italian compositors, heavy metal, religious song remixes and other mp3 files. Some textures in this mod include swastikas, pornography, gore and nudity. Just some of the celebrities lampooned in the mod include Francesco Schettino, the captain responsible for the Costa Concordia ship disaster, Father Pio, Mike Bongiorno, a famous Italian TV Show host appearing as an Archvile-like sub-boss enemy, Moira Orfei an Italian actress and circus preformer, Emilio Fede, an Italian TV Show host, shown as an ally that fights against a horde of zombies, Vasco Rossi, an Italian singer famous for trying to take down an internet page that was satirizing him, Roberto "Baffo" Da Crema, famous Italian TV salesman or Paolo Brosio, an Italian journalist, writer and TV show host, shown as a enemy wearing a monk outfit.

Many Italians commenting on the mod state that Grezzo 2 cannot be truly appreciated by Non-Italians, as the cannot understand all the in-jokes and humor understandable only to Italians.

Game Modes

The game features several "game modes", which take the place of Doom's chapters - the tutorial which consists of a school level and a racetrack, the story mode itself, a "invasion" mode, where the player fights increasingly difficult waves of enemies, and a set of games intended for multiplayer play.

Reception and Controversies

The Doom community's reaction to Grezzo 2 was very negative at first

The Doom community's reaction to Grezzo 2 was very negative at first

The mod was well-received by gamers, spawning a sequel called GrezzoDue 2, a song by Chiappoiders, and a small but dedicated fandom, but became quite controversial in Italy, mainly because of its offensive nature, and its portrayal of Padre Pio da Pietrelcina, who is one of the most beloved saints in Italy.

It received a mixed response from the Doom community when it was discovered that the vast majority of the game was cobbled together from other mods. Creators of several mods assets from which were put in Grezzo 2 were especially vocal about their dislike of the game.

Grezzo 2 is currently on the List of Prohibited Games for Twitch.

Re-releases and DLC

The first version of Grezzo 2 was released in 2012, but it wasn't very popular. The 2013 update, however, received mainstream attention.

An expansion for the game was released on the 28th of June 2013 called Viaggio A Merdjugorie, roughly translating as Travel to Shitjugorie. Also, in 2013, an English translation for the pre-DLC version was released.

The final version of the game was released on the 20th of December 2013. Recently, a english translation for the whole games was released.

As Grezzo 2 gained popularity, what can only be described as "Grezzo clones" started to be made by people who desired to copy Grezzo 2's style of gameplay. None of them were released, and some might be considered lost media. Some notable Grezzo 2 clones include:
