Doom 3
According to the report, Stratton secured the gold medal at the 149th Quakecon Games, defeating thousands of other athletes to claim the year's prize of 10 million credits. The event itself is an arena-based competitive sport celebrated in the UAC/Earth setting.
Doom: Mercury Rising
Andy (whose real name is Andrew) Stratton is a minor character in the Doom: Mercury Rising campaign. Four years before he would become the winner of the 149th Quakecon Games, in 2141, our hero served as a marine on Mercury. He was part of a military unit tasked with ensuring the safety of a small group of scientists and UAC workers as part of the secret mission, Operation Oversight.
Under the command of marine squad leader Don Ivan Punchatz, he and three other marines escorted a group of 10 civilians aboard a wagon of The Solar Railway, which runs along the Mercury equator. Unfortunately, the wagon was attacked by demonic forces, though thankfully, this occurred well after the civilians had been delivered to their destination. Two members of the five-man squad survived the attack (one being Andy, the other K. Lee-Creel), and both go on to feature in the Doom 3 storyline, which is set in 2145.
Stratton escapes the assault by the infernal hordes because something catches his attention moments before the demonic attack begins. He was checking the cargo containers that had been loaded hastily aboard. As he passed between Cargo Bays 7 and 8, he accidentally spotted a suspicious figure, who was silently sneaking between the crates like a fleeting shadow.
Andrew was in the Propulsion Room 3, examining the strange, newly loaded sarcophagus-like containers. The door to Cargo Bay 8 opened, and the silhouette of a hooded figure became visible in the strong equatorial sunlight. The intruder was likely momentarily blinded by the indoor darkness after the bright sunlight outside. Andy seized the moment, hid, and watched intently.
The hooded figure, who resembled a monk, was visibly in a rush. He muttered a few sentences in some incomprehensible language, then moved on. Andy did not notice the faint but growing glow around the sarcophagi; his attention was completely focused on not losing his now primary target. He was determined to find out who this person was, when he suddenly realised, to his horror, that everything around him was covered in blood. Slippery, bubbling, and warm blood was oozing directly from the sarcophagi. This is when the madness began, completely changing our hero's life. See details below.
Operation Oversight Report: Part II
"The attacking creature is incredibly fast; hard to track its movement. It seems to be teleporting, but it'll be eliminated soon. I continue following the primary target: the hooded figure that must have boarded during the loading procedure at Lu Hsun. I summarise this just in case the mission fails: The target wears completely inappropriate clothing for the Mercury environment. It wears a red cloak with gold trim and white armour, and a white mask covers its face. It looks like some kind of monk. He moves like a shadow, cautious and unseen. I spotted him accidentally in Propulsion Room 3, where the sarcophagi are stored. He was muttering something around each sarcophagus in an unknown language. Since then, blood has been pouring out of all of them."
F* cking hell! If I ever survive this... (Audio log)
"Well, I guess that’s it. Escorting these assh* les is fine, but this life-or-death sh* t is not for me for sure. I'm out of here! I hope we dock soon. Then straight to QuakeCon, bro! (Once I got out.) There I can show what I'm made of, but for real money. Anything is better than this disgusting, sh* thole. I'm not John McClane! He wouldn't enjoy this, and it ain't Christmas either! Just a sec. Time to send my official report, and I need to switch on my suit cooling. Whoever comes this way, I'm dead, teehee... It's done. So, the hooded f* cker couldn't have just vanished! There must be a secret door nearby. Or maybe on the other side... Holy sh* t, someone's coming! I'm dead, I'm dead... I am f* cking dead... Sh* t, it's freezing cold in here..."
